Perched on the hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay, the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, California, is an iconic destination that blends historic charm with modern luxury. Recently, I had the pleasure of staying at this renowned landmark while visiting my daughter, who is a student at UC Berkeley. My experience at the Claremont was nothing short of spectacular—from its stunning architecture and top-tier amenities to its impeccable service, it provided the perfect home away from home.

The Claremont Hotel has been a fixture in the East Bay since 1915. Its grand, castle-like structure stands as a testament to early 20th-century luxury, and stepping inside felt like walking into a piece of history. Despite its age, the hotel has been beautifully maintained and updated, blending classic elegance with modern comforts. From the moment I arrived, I could sense the hotel’s rich past combined with a modern, welcoming atmosphere. The staff was warm and professional, ensuring that every detail of my stay was seamless.

After a long day of traveling and reuniting with my daughter, stepping into my room was a welcome retreat. We stayed in Room 413, which, while comfortable and well-appointed, had a less-than-ideal view—overlooking the roof rather than the stunning Bay scenery the Claremont is known for. Though I had hoped for a more scenic backdrop, the plush bedding, Le Labo toiletries, and thoughtful décor made up for it. The room was quiet and designed for both relaxation and function, offering a cozy spot to unwind after a day of exploring.

One of the highlights of my stay was meeting up with old friends for drinks at Limewood Bar & Restaurant. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a sophisticated yet relaxed vibe. Sitting on the outdoor terrace with a perfectly crafted cocktail in hand, we caught up while watching the sun set over the Bay. We laughed over shared memories while sipping expertly made cocktails, and for a few hours, it felt as though no time had passed. The cocktail menu was creative, featuring seasonal ingredients and unique twists on classic drinks. The combination of great company, delicious drinks, and stunning views made for an unforgettable evening.

The Claremont Hotel is also home to a world-class fitness and wellness center, and we made full use of its amenities. My husband took advantage of the impressive facilities—swimming laps in the pool while I used the weight equipment for a full-body workout. The gym was well-equipped, spacious, and had a great selection of machines and free weights. It was clear that many locals are members of the fitness club, giving the space a vibrant energy rather than the usual sterile feel of many hotel gyms. Whether lounging by the pool with a cocktail in hand or unwinding in the steam room, the Claremont provided the perfect balance of relaxation and activity.

Beyond the hotel, the location provided easy access to the best of Berkeley. One morning, I met my daughter and her roommate for breakfast at Rick & Ann’s, a cozy neighborhood favorite just a short walk from the Claremont. We all ordered Spinach and Cheese Omelets, which were perfectly cooked and served with a side of potatoes. My daughter’s roommate, a vegetarian, opted for an Impossible Burger, which looked just as delicious as our omelets. One of the unexpected highlights of the meal was the house-made muffin that came with each plate—light, fluffy, and hiding a decadent surprise inside: a swirl of warm Nutella. It was the perfect touch of sweetness to round out a hearty breakfast. The atmosphere at Rick & Ann’s was welcoming and lively, filled with locals enjoying their morning coffee and conversation. It was a wonderful way to start the day and spend some quality time together before heading off to explore more of Berkeley.

For a special treat, we stopped by Fournee, a popular bakery located just across the street from the Claremont at 2912 Domingo Ave. It didn’t take long to realize this place was special—there was a long line of people eagerly waiting for fresh baked goods, and after just one bite, I understood why. The pastries were exceptional, made with high-quality ingredients and an attention to detail that was evident in every bite. The aroma of fresh bread and warm pastries filled the air, making it nearly impossible to walk by without stopping. Whether craving a flaky croissant, a rich and buttery pastry, or a loaf of artisan bread, Fournee delivers in every way.

My stay at the Claremont Hotel was a perfect blend of relaxation, luxury, and meaningful time with my family and friends. Whether you're visiting a student, seeking a romantic getaway, or looking for a wellness retreat, the Claremont offers an exceptional experience. The combination of old-world charm and modern amenities makes it a standout destination. Though my view from Room 413 wasn’t the postcard-perfect Bay vista I had imagined, everything else about my stay made up for it.

Would I return? Absolutely. And next time, I might just book a different room to soak in even more of what this remarkable hotel—and Berkeley—has to offer. Whether for a weekend getaway or an extended visit, the Claremont delivers an experience that lingers long after you’ve checked out.
